At Rwamwanja, girls struggle to remain girls

She has been in the queue for about 40 minutes now. She crosses one of her legs somehow to relax her muscles for they must be beginning to pain. The legs are not supporting her alone. Around her neck is a large green piece of cloth that runs over her shoulder down her waist, holding a baby.

From her demeanour, it is difficult to exactly define her feelings. Her face is a bit weary at one point and at another she wears a grin. You would want to see the latter, for when she smiles, you see a teenager; a girl with a beautiful smile. Yes, by all definition, Sarah is a girl, yet not quite. Girls don’t carry babies, at least not their biological children. However, the baby Sarah carries is hers. She is a mother; a teenage mother. In fact she is in the queue to register her baby for immunization.
